Hi, I'm Dr. Annie Moten. Since earning my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University, I have approached therapy as a collaborative journey, walking alongside my clients to help them understand their experiences without judgment. My goal is to support individuals in creating a life that acknowledges both their pain and their potential for growth. I strive to build trust through straightforwardness, kindness, irreverence, and humor, creating a space that is both safe and empowering. Drawing on my extensive DBT training and lived experience, I foster emotional containment and autonomy. I also incorporate creative outlets. Our approach at Better Life Associates is active and collaborative. We believe that a strong working alliance with our patients is critical to help achieve emotional insights in treatment that lead to positive and lasting change. We also help identify patterns of behavior that hold individuals back from leading a better and more fulfilling life. Whether you are seeking in-person treatment in Long Island, NY or teletherapy in NY, NJ, or PA, I'd be delighted to hear from you. I have limited therapy session times currently available in my schedule, so let's set up an initial preliminary call soon to discuss how we can work together.

Your struggles are unique and complex. As a psychologist my aim is to help you explore your personal narratives, to understand how your past is affecting your present and keeping you from fulfilling your values. Whether you are experiencing difficulty with relationships, life events, healing from trauma, or simply don't find yourself enjoying your life as you once did, I will help you feel grounded while we gain a non-judgmental perspective on your struggles and put our minds together to strategize ways forward. I specialize in treatments for trauma, depression, anxiety, job stress, and relationship issues. I take a pragmatic and eclectic approach by integrating psychodynamic theories with evidence-based tools. I draw on treatments ranging from CBT, ACT, and CPT, tailoring treatment to your unique needs and experiences. I completed advanced training at Haverford College and the Dept. of Veteran Affairs Hospital where I continue to work as a trauma specialist. Finding a therapist you click with can be a daunting task but is a key part of healing. In therapy, I am open, creative, and curious. If my approach sounds right for you or if you’d like to learn more, please do not hesitate to reach out or visit my site to schedule an appointment for a free consultation. It would be my privilege to speak with you.

My therapeutic approach is relational, solution-focused, multiculturally informed, and evidence-based. I believe that cultivating a nurturing, nonjudgmental environment is the foundation for therapeutic outcomes. With a CBT- and DBT- informed approach, my clients utilize therapy to explore long-standing problems, navigate current stressors, and work on more effective ways to manage mental health symptoms. I strive to help my clients build a life that feels meaningful and rewarding, where they feel more at ease and more successful in various areas (and various stages). I specifically have experience working with teens and young adults with mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and self-harm. My practice primarily serves LGBTQ+, queer, trans, and gender-expansive adults, alongside individuals navigating complex trauma, relational patterns, and perinatal mental health concerns. My clinical approach is supportive, affirming, trauma-informed, and grounded in relational and attachment-based frameworks. I integrate an awareness of how systems of power, identity, and lived experience shape mental health, and I strive to hold both individual healing and broader context in view. I have specialized focus in complex trauma, including childhood trauma, relational trauma, and attachment wounds. Many of my clients are exploring identity development, processing experiences of minority stress, or seeking a therapeutic space where they can fully express their gender and sexual identities without needing to justify or defend them. I also provide affirming care for individuals during pregnancy, postpartum transitions, fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, and other reproductive experiences. I am particularly mindful of the unique emotional and systemic considerations that may arise for LGBTQ+ individuals and families during these periods. While no therapeutic space can be perfectly free from the impact of broader social forces, I am deeply committed to creating a therapy environment that feels brave, collaborative, and respectful. I engage in ongoing consultation, supervision, and continuing education to support culturally responsive and identity-affirming care. My work is guided by trauma-informed principles, a commitment to equity and inclusion, and respect for client autonomy and self-determination. I view therapy as a collaborative process where clients are supported in deepening self-understanding, strengthening resilience, and moving toward meaningful change.

Most people who look at you might never know how much you are struggling. Your pattern of holding it all in, staying busy, or pulling away from others has worked well enough to get you through… till now. Now, it feels more like you’re caught in an endless maze of thoughts and worries, or like there’s a weighted blanket dragging you down. When anxiety or depression are present, everything in life can feel more difficult. I am a trauma-informed therapist specializing in helping you unpack those things that connect your past and present to build a more fulfilling, authentic future. I take a practical and straightforward approach to therapy and am comfortable with discomfort if it means making progress. As your therapist, I will take the time to see things from your point of view. You know your life best, so I will listen and understand. My sessions are open, honest, and thoughtful. Therapy shouldn't be another place where you have to pretend. I will work to understand the real you and use my experience to help you.

The stories we believe about ourselves are essential, and yet, they are stories we are often unaware of. You may have decided to seek treatment because you (or someone in your life) noticed something about you or how you live in the world that has been difficult, like feeling disappointed in yourself or others, and this may have impacted things like your schoolwork or your relationships. Whatever the difficulties are, these are themes in your story -- we would work together to make sense of them, and see what we can do about them. The possibilities may include things like psychotherapy (talk therapy) or medications, both of which are treatment options I offer in my psychiatry practice. Because I think it is essential to treat you as a whole person, I am only accepting new patients who are interested in psychotherapy (typically at least weekly), either with me in my practice, or with a therapist with whom I have a working relationship. As a physician (medical doctor) specialized in psychiatry, I draw on years of dedicated training for your treatment; qualifying as a psychiatrist entails, after completion of a bachelor's degree, eight years of full-time medical education, including six years of supervised, direct patient care in a variety of treatment settings. To learn more about my practice or to request a phone call to discuss a consultation visit, please visit my practice website, www.terrafirmapsychiatry.com.

I HOPE TO PROVIDE AN UNDERSTANDING, EMPATHETIC SPACE FOR YOU TO BRING YOUR CHALLENGES, WORRIES, OR FEARS. MY CORE BELIEF IS THAT EACH PERSON IS THE EXPERT OF THEIR OWN STORY AND THEREFORE HAS THE POWER WITHIN THEM FOR PRODUCTIVE GROWTH. SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED SOME GENTLE GUIDANCE ALONG THE WAY AND THAT'S WHERE I COME IN! I UTILIZE MULTIPLE THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES AND CREATIVE INTERVENTIONS TO TAILOR EACH SESSION TO MEET YOUR UNIQUE NEEDS AT THAT MOMENT. SOME OF THESE TECHNIQUES MAY FOCUS ON WELLNESS, SYMPTOM TRACKING, AWARENESS, THOUGHT REFRAMING, ETC. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT A PERSON'S UNIQUE EXPERIENCES DEEPLY AFFECT THEM AND SO I OFTEN APPROACH COUNSELING THROUGH A TRAUMA-INFORMED LENS. THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS IS A CONSTANTLY CHANGING JOURNEY THAT REQUIRES DIFFERENT PIECES AT EACH STAGE. I WILL BE WITH YOU ALONG THIS JOURNEY, THINKING OF CREATIVE WAYS TO ADDRESS YOUR NEEDS AND ALWAYS PROVIDING YOU WITH SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT.

I believe that a strong therapeutic rapport is the heart of meaningful growth in therapy. When we feel truly seen, heard, and understood, we are better able to explore our experiences, reflect on our patterns, and take steps toward change. My goal is to create a space where clients feel safe, respected, and comfortable to be themselves, no matter what challenges they may be facing. My approach to therapy is person-centered, which means I value each client’s unique perspective and believe that you are the expert of your own life. I work alongside my clients, offering support, guidance, and encouragement as we navigate the journey together. I strive to meet people where they are, honoring their pace while helping them uncover new insights and tools for growth. I hold a Master’s degree in Art Therapy with a Specialization in Counseling and am a Registered Art Therapist. Creativity can be a powerful way to explore feelings and experiences that are difficult to put into words. In sessions, I often incorporate art and the creative process to help clients process emotions, gain clarity, and express themselves in new ways. Whether through drawing, painting, collage, or other forms of artmaking, this approach allows for deeper self-understanding and healing beyond traditional talk therapy. I also bring personal experience to my work, having navigated the loss of my father at a young age. Experiencing grief firsthand has given me a deep understanding of the complexities of loss. This experience informs my approach to grief therapy, allowing me to connect with clients in a compassionate and authentic way. In addition to my art therapy work, I am currently pursuing my Animal-Assisted Therapy Certificate. I am excited to soon integrate my therapy dog-in-training, Bear, into sessions as a comforting and supportive presence. Animals can offer a unique kind of connection and grounding that supports emotional regulation and overall well-being. I have experience working with children, teens, and adults in a variety of settings, including partial hospitalization, inpatient, residential treatment, and outpatient therapy. My specialties include supporting individuals through anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and significant life transitions. I am especially passionate about working with clients during times of change—whether it’s starting a new school, transitioning to college, beginning a new career, or navigating changes in relationships or identity. No matter your reason for seeking therapy, my hope is to create an environment where you feel safe to explore your inner world, discover your strengths, and find meaningful ways to move forward.
