Therapists for college students near Duke University
Hi! My name is Karin and I am a licensed mental health counselor. I work with many different presenting concerns and help students tackle any difficulties that come up in their everyday life. In working together, my intention is and will always be to foster an environment that is filled with safety and trust, as well as void of judgment. Being vulnerable can be very difficult on its own, and it’s essential to me to create a space where vulnerability does not come with any more obstacles or barriers. I understand how hard it can be to talk about our problems and the issues we struggle with on a daily basis, and it’s important to me to create an environment where it is easier to talk about what’s going on. I deeply enjoy working with clients from all backgrounds and cultures and having the privilege to provide support along the way. I would love to meet you. Please reach out.
Whether you have reoccurring symptoms or are facing a difficult time in your life right now, we are here to help. We work with clients experiencing various symptoms related to: Anxiety, ADHD, Body Image Issues, Depression, Family & Life Transitions, Low Self-esteem, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders, Relationship Conflicts, Social Anxiety, Stress, Trauma, and Women’s Issues.
I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) offering virtual sessions to all residents in NC and in-person on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Raleigh. I work with adults (18+) who are navigating anxiety disorders, neurodivergence, relationships, and trauma. My approach is client-centered, emphasizing authenticity and empathetic understanding, mixed in with a variety of skills tailored to fit your needs. I particularly enjoy working with young adults who are trying to figure out who they are away from all the external pressures and influences. I believe in building a trusting and genuine therapeutic relationship with my clients, working together as a team to navigate life’s ups, downs, and everything in-between. I’m committed to providing an empowering, trauma-informed, LGBTQ+ affirming, anti-racist, pro-equality space where everyone feels seen, valued, and heard.
I am a bilingual (Spanish/English) Licensed Clinical Social Worker. As a veteran, I understand the importance of trust, resilience, and having someone who truly listens without judgment. My approach to therapy is grounded in real-world experience, cultural humility, and a deep commitment to supporting individuals through trauma, anxiety, depression, and major life transitions. I offer a steady, grounded presence to help clients build emotional strength, develop healthier patterns, and move toward a life that feels meaningful and manageable.
I have a MSW from UNC Pembroke and have been practicing as a mental health therapist since 2015. I have been working in the mental health field since 2007. I have an extension history of working with individuals dealing with issues related to anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Whether you are going through grief, healing from trauma, struggling with relationship issues or need assistance navigating life’s challenges and changes, I am here to help you achieve the clarity, confidence, and momentum necessary to get from where you are to where you want to be. Together, we will work to identify and address the issues and obstacles keeping you from moving forward and getting what you want out of your life. Our sessions will help you cope more effectively with challenging situations and adjust more capably to changing circumstances using practical strategies that improve your symptoms and well-being. I work with adults and young adults from diverse backgrounds experiencing a wide variety of presenting concerns including: trauma, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, OCD, ADHD, military/veterans issues, and change of life events. I also have extensive experience coaching clients to reach professional, financial, educational and athletic performance goals. My goal is to guide and support you towards empowerment, growth, and healing. My approach to therapy is tailored to each individual client. I often incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, solution-focused therapy and narrative therapy into sessions. I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional with specialized training in EMDR, an evidence-based approach that helps people process unresolved trauma in more adaptive ways. EMDR can be used to treat a multitude of presenting issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, and phobias.
Are you looking for a space where you can be yourself and feel truly heard? Whether you are navigating stress, relationship challenges, life transitions, or exploring your identity, you don’t have to go through it alone. Therapy offers a safe and supportive space to better understand yourself, clarify what matters most, and take steps toward a life that feels meaningful- whatever that looks like for you. My approach is collaborative, authentic, and rooted in curiosity. I believe the therapeutic relationship is one of the most powerful tools for growth. In my work, I am fully present, listen deeply, and create a space where you feel heard and supported. This is your journey, and my role is to provide a space that feels safe, validating, and empowering- where you can explore, heal, and grow at your own pace. Together, we’ll explore your values, build flexibility in the way that you relate to your thoughts and emotions, and develop coping skills that fit your life. Rather than focusing on “fixing” everything, we’ll work toward creating a life that feels authentic and aligned with what matters most to you- even when life feels difficult. While I am open to working with clients of all ages and backgrounds, I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults. Additionally, I am passionate about providing affirming care for people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community, creating a space where every part of your identity is respected and celebrated. If you have taken this step toward seeking support, I hope you feel proud- I certainly am! Choosing a therapist is deeply personal, so if something I said here resonates with you, I would be honored to connect and learn more about your story.

The idea of starting therapy can create a lot of worry and stress for new and even experienced clients. Therapy is about being vulnerable and I am so proud of you for taking the first step towards self healing. Our therapeutic relationship begins with establishing trust within the first few moments of meeting. Those who are searching for a therapist often get lost in the “where do I start” mindset, so I make it may goal to help ease your doubt, answer questions and guide you on the path towards change. We will re-discover your strengths and focus on your potential to understand past trauma, intense emotions and current struggles. Our time together is focused on you. I meet my clients where they are in session whether you are experiencing the highest of highs or the lowest of lows. I focus on a person centered approach, putting you in control of where you want to see change. I work with children to young adults (5-45) in person in NC or virtually in North Carolina and Florida. The relationship between you and I is what makes counseling essential to kickstarting effective progress. I am with you every step of the way to help monitor your journey. Together we will focus on skills that boost confidence, strengthen self-worth, create timely goals, and help you understand intense emotions that cause distress in your daily life.
As a recent graduate, I am aware of the difficulties that come with being a college student. It is very important that you have someone who can be a listening ear and guidance through struggles. I believe that it is necessary for the counseling relationship to be empathetic, safe, and non-judgmental. I aim to provide a safe and supportive space to collaborate and work at your own pace to reach goals. I hope to empower my clients through heightening self-confidence and utilizing strengths as well as enhancing one’s accountability for behaviors. Through the counseling relationship, we can facilitate change.
People I work with often are starting out in therapy or interested in moving towards trauma work. If you're interested in learning how to slow it down, use mindfulness, or feel more connected to your body, I utilize narrative and somatic techniques to help people reclaim their peace, energy, and rest. As an Asian-Mexican-American psychotherapist, I enjoy helping people learn more about connecting to ancestry, spirituality, community healing and peer support resources that remind us we are all connected. When I'm not doing therapy I love going to the beach, writing, camping/hiking/backpacking, and traveling.
